Reduction in Sickness
Absence
In 1990 a regional electricity
company realized that back pain and similar
disorders were accounting for one third
of the total number of sickness absence
days per year. This included time waiting
for NHS physiotherapy appointments. For
the average case of back pain - early intervention
with physical therapy resulted in employees
being back at work 5 weeks earlier than
previously!
In 1990 the average number of days of sickness
absence per employee was 14.5 per year.
Following the introduction of physical therapy
this was reduced to 7.1 in 1998.
In a power station where musculoskeletal
problems accounted for 33% of the total
number of sickness absence days, use of
physical therapy resulted in a reduction
of sickness absence from 598 lost days in
the six months before, to 345 lost days
in the six months after its introduction.

Some Painful Facts
119 million certified days of sickness absence from
back pain cost industry over 6 billion pounds in
1997.
In 1999 about 25% of those surveyed with
back pain alone or back pain and lower limb
problems were forced to change jobs.
The longer a person is off work with musculoskeletal
problems, the less likely it is that they will
be able to return to work. In fact, individuals
who cannot work because of their back pain and
still have symptoms after one year, have less
than 2% chance of returning to their jobs.
None of the surveys have taken into account the
unknown factor of the cost of litigation!
